“Welcome To Reality” is a piece of music with accompanying custom artwork by Zaflon. Originally created in 2018 and played on BBC Radio 6 by Mary Anne Hobbs on 6 Music Recomends. This track represents Zaflon at his most experimental and abstract, utilising custom made Max MSP ensembles and a completely new style of drum programming unique to this piece.
“I was addicted to using Max and loved the way I could make delays do the things I’ve always dreamt of by being able to filter pre and post feedback at the same time as playing with feedback time, attaching everything to a midi controller and really throwing the sound around. I use my own vocal in this track as-well as my main 4 second female vocal sample _QVT VOC 1#22 establishing the hook”
Welcome To Reality [The Audio] is a very layered and intricate piece that intensifies exponentially as the music progresses, reflecting all the strain and pressure of 21st century life with it’s fear, hope and fury. Heaving synths and dark atmosphere embeded into Zaflon’s unique composition style make Welcome To Reality a truly delectable piece of Zaflon History.
“In many ways this is one of the most expressive instrumental pieces I’ve ever made. I was really trying to get to grips with what it meant to live in the real world in terms of expectations, how my reality seemed alien to others, yet they would not understand how theirs seemed just as strange to me. This piece does not fit a genre as per say but somehow exists in the smoldering ruins of post-dubstep, artists like Nicolás Jaar and Nils Frahm are very inspiring to me”
The concept of an NFT seems really far out to most people at this stage in our digital civilisation, but I’ve been waiting for technology to exist like this for a very long time. As someone who’s life’s work is a paper-trail of digital artefacts. I’ve seen music going from being a rare and precious commodity pre-Napster, to the abundant freedom of early myspace followed by it’s complete destruction. NFT’s work on the principle of forced scarcity and definable ownership of an artefact. An NFT only exists in one place at one time, yes you maybe able to view it from anywhere in the world but the custodian of said artefact is the only one with the power to gift, sell or destroy it. Being part of this exciting story thrills me no end. As an artist I now truly have the power to imbue a digital artefact with value like never before.
Welcome To Reality [the image] is a piece inspired by the same themes and made in quite a similar way. It’s a heavily layered collage of natural and man-made artefacts with a faded encroached-on representation of humanity at it’s core. I originally made this piece just so I had a cool image for Soundcloud, but as the piece developed, the image became just as integral to the piece as the music itself.
Welcome To Reality is available as a one-off NFT with great investment potential. Own a part of the Zaflon story by buying the original NFT here.
